Dental Benefits and the End of the Year

Do you pay for dental insurance? Have you been putting off your cleaning visits? Is there restorative work that you need to have done? If you answered yes to either of these questions chances are you may be wasting money.

When you pay for dental benefits you want to make sure you are getting the most out of them.  No insurance company or benefit plan are the same. Everyone has a different monthly premium and there are wide varieties of benefit maximums and coverage.

Benefit maximums range from about $1000-$2500 per year.  Some years are fiscal but the majority are calendar years, which means come January 1st your benefits reset.  Whatever benefits you have left from the previous year are lost!  Even if you are not “in network” with your dental provider, most preventative work ( ie., cleanings, exams, x-rays ) is covered at 100% of the approved amount and major work ( ie. crowns, onlays, bridges ) is covered at around 50% of the approved amount.  When it comes to basic and major work, there will be money out of pocket needed BUT it will be less then waiting until the new year to tackle a larger treatment plan from your provider.

My advice is, make sure you see your dental provider every 3-6 months ( periodontal patients are recommended to be seen every 3-4 months ).   A lot can happen in 6 months and it gives your hygienist  and dentist the ability to detect any issues in the foreseeable future. There are many dental issues that arise that could be nipped in the bud before they get worse.  So, don’t wait!  Use your benefits and keep your oral health up to date.

Keep Smiling 🙂
